A supplement asks the insurer to pay additional covered costs that were missing from an earlier estimate. Send an itemized estimate, photos, invoices or specialist reports that show the added damage or work, explain each difference, and check your policy for notice and submission deadlines.

When a supplement makes sense
- Repairs uncover damage no one could see at the first inspection
- The repair method in the estimate turned out to be impractical
- The first estimate left out covered work or used the wrong quantities
- Material or labor costs changed before work started
- Emergency work was done after the insurer’s estimate was written
A supplement is a request tied to the same claim. It is not a new claim, though some insurers route it through a separate form or contact, so ask who receives it.
How to put one together
- Name the claim. Claim number, date of loss, adjuster, policy number.
- List the added items. One line per item: what, where, how much, and why it was not in the first estimate.
- Attach proof. Photos taken before the area was closed up, your contractor’s estimate or invoice, and any report from a plumber, engineer or other specialist.
- Tie it to the covered loss. The insurer needs to see that the added work comes from damage it already accepted.
- Send it in writing and keep proof of delivery.
- Follow up. Ask for a written decision, and ask what is missing if it is not approved.
Evidence that helps
Dated photos with a scale reference, moisture or air readings, receipts, a contractor’s note on what was found and when, and a marked-up copy of the insurer’s own estimate showing what changed.
Things to check
- Your policy’s notice and proof-of-loss conditions. Do not assume the first estimate closed the door.
- Whether the insurer wants to inspect first. If new damage appears, photograph it and tell the insurer before the area is covered.
- Whether the added item is covered. A supplement does not change what the policy covers.
FAQ
What documents support a supplement?
An itemized estimate or invoice, dated photos, any specialist report, and a short written explanation of what changed. Tie each item to the line in the insurer’s estimate it relates to.
Is a supplement a new claim?
Usually it is more money on the existing claim for the same loss. A new date of loss or a different cause can be a separate claim.
