Why Dutchess County claims are often large

What to do first
- Call 911 or a plumber for the emergency, and shut off the water at the main or the well pump.

- Report the claim and write down the claim number and the adjuster’s name.
- Photograph everything before it is removed, including closets, the basement and the attic.
- Do not sign a final settlement or a release until the whole loss has been measured.

Do you come to Dutchess County in person?
Yes. We inspect the property ourselves, measure and photograph the damage, and meet the insurance company’s adjuster on site. Poughkeepsie is about an hour from our Suffern office.
My house is older and the insurer priced cheaper materials. What can I do?
Most policies pay to repair with materials of like kind and quality. If the estimate uses standard materials for custom or historic work, that can be challenged with proper documentation and a detailed estimate.
Are barns, garages and other buildings covered?
Often yes, under the “other structures” part of a homeowners policy, up to that part’s limit. These are easy to leave off an estimate, so make sure they are included.
Can a public adjuster help if my insurer already paid?
Often yes. If damage was missed or underpaid, the claim can usually be supplemented within the policy’s time limits. Cashing the check usually does not close the claim unless you signed a release.
