Persistent smoke odor can be a reason to request further evaluation, not proof by itself of the exact work required. Document the remaining conditions and prior cleaning, obtain qualified restoration findings, and ask the insurer to review any additional covered remediation.

Odor means the job is not done
Smoke restoration that leaves odor behind has not finished the loss. Odor usually means residues remain in wall cavities, insulation, ductwork or porous materials. The insurer’s obligation is to restore the property, and a home that still smells of smoke is not restored. That said, odor alone does not specify the fix; findings do.
Build the record
- What was already cleaned, by whom, with the invoices and scope.
- Where the odor persists and when it is worst, with dates.
- Any contents that still smell after cleaning.
- A qualified restoration specialist’s written findings on what remains and why.
Ask for review, not just sympathy
Put the request in writing: the work is incomplete, here is the documentation, here is the specialist’s assessment, please re-inspect. If the insurer’s position is that the job is finished, ask for that in writing too. A written position is something you can challenge.
FAQ
Should an independent specialist inspect?
When odor persists after professional cleaning, yes. A written assessment from a qualified restoration specialist turns “it still smells” into documented, actionable findings.
What if the cleaning contractor says it is finished?
The contractor’s opinion does not close the claim. If odor remains, get the independent assessment and ask the insurer to review the additional work.
