Homeowners insurance generally covers accidental fire damage, subject to the policy’s terms, limits and exclusions. A kitchen fire can affect the building and belongings differently, so document both the burned area and any smoke or firefighting-water damage.

The claim is bigger than the burn mark
A kitchen fire rarely damages only the stove or one cabinet. Smoke and soot travel through the whole home, and the water or foam used to put the fire out creates its own damage. A claim that only covers the visibly burned area is usually an underpaid claim. The full scope – building, contents, smoke remediation and water damage – belongs in the estimate.
Building and belongings are separate
The structure (cabinets, walls, wiring, flooring) is claimed under the building coverage. The contents (appliances you own, cookware, food, furniture affected by smoke) are claimed under the personal property coverage, with its own limits and valuation rules. Both lists need documentation.
What to do now
- Photograph everything before cleanup when it is safe: the burn area, smoke trails and water-damaged rooms.
- Do not throw away damaged items before they are documented, when practical.
- Get the fire department report.
- Start the contents inventory early, while memory is fresh.
FAQ
Are cabinets and appliances treated differently?
Usually yes. Built-in cabinets are part of the building; freestanding appliances you own are contents. The distinction changes which coverage and limits apply.
Can smoke damage be part of the fire claim?
Yes. Smoke and soot damage from the same fire is part of the same loss, including rooms the flames never reached. Document it before cleaning.
