Insurance approved a roof patch. Can I ask for replacement?

You can request review if a patch will not adequately repair covered storm damage. Support the request with photos and a qualified contractor’s explanation of the damage, materials and repair feasibility. Roof age, or a wish for a new roof, does not on its own establish a covered replacement.

What to do now

  1. Get the insurer’s roof scope in writing: which slopes, how much material, and which repair method.
  2. Have a qualified roofer inspect the whole roof and write down what they find, slope by slope.
  3. Ask the roofer whether the approved repair is practical: can shingles be lifted and replaced without breaking neighbors? Is matching material available? Will the patch hold?
  4. Photograph the damage, with close-ups and wide shots of each slope.
  5. Send your evidence to the insurer with a clear request for a revised scope and a re-inspection.

Evidence that supports replacement

  • Damage spread across enough of the roof that spot repairs are not workable
  • Brittle shingles that break when a repair is attempted
  • A roofer’s written explanation of why a patch will fail
  • Manufacturer information, if a matching product is no longer made
  • Photos, damage counts per slope and the date of the storm

What does not support it by itself

Age of the roof, cosmetic wear, or damage from earlier events. The claim has to be about covered damage from the loss you reported.

Matching and code issues

Some policies address matching of materials or required code upgrades, and many do not. Read your policy and endorsements, and ask the insurer in writing how they apply to your roof. Do not assume coverage for either.

Policy and state differences

Roof coverage can be actual cash value or replacement cost, and some policies have separate deductibles for wind or hail. State rules on disputes and appraisal differ. Check your policy and your state regulator’s guidance. See our storm damage page.

FAQ

What evidence supports a full roof replacement?
A roofer’s written report on the extent of damage and why a patch will not work, photos of each slope, and the insurer’s own scope showing what it approved.

What if shingles are discontinued?
Ask the roofer to document the effort to match, such as samples and supplier notes, and ask the insurer in writing how your policy treats matching. Whether it is covered depends on the policy and state.
